Tracy, I fully agree that the primary responsibilty here lies with the agencies and that they are vastly underfunded and that Congress should give the FDA and USDA (and, even more importantly, in my view, the EPA) the money to perform the tasks they are supposed to perform. However, the regulations you speak of are unlikely to occur absent legislation, and the political will it takes to adopt legislation. To the best of my knowledge, in the EU and those European countries that have enacted a ban on antibiotic feeding, this has always been done by legislation. Implementation of the law then rightly lies with the agencies and their experts.

Congress should not get involved in animal agriculture at all, because frankly, most of them know nothing about it. So legislation ends up being about pleasing special interest groups (farmers, animal rights etc.) rather than about protecting animals or consumers. These kind of rules should come from the FDA or USDA. I realize that these agencies are already underfunded and understaffed, but that is where policy on food and agriculture should be made. What Congress should do is fund/staff these agencies so they can carry out their jobs.

Hi Nicolette,
I am so excited that Mrs. Obama is doing this--its about time! And it sends a great message to everyone. I would also like to see The White House put some energy into sourcing their food locally/regionally as well. Think of what a powerful message that would send!
